Why the hell am I doing this?
My health wasn't doing great at the end of 2024. I had been eating and boozing a lot over the holidays resulting in my 5'10" frame carrying around 191.2 pounds.
I finished 2024 having only ran 328.2 miles. It wasn't nothing, but it also wasn't much of something. For perspective, in 2021 I ran 2,022 miles. That's 5.5 miles a day and I had to really bust my fuckin' ass to hit that goal. My original goal was just 2,000 miles but my friend Adam suggested 2,022 miles would be cool. Once that idea was Inception'd in my brain I couldn't get it out and ending up busting even more of my ass to hit that stretch goal. I showed the bar chart showing each month's miles from my Nike Run Club app to my boy Frank, to which he replied “Helluvah rally in December, Ki.” Fuck yeah it was.
Now for 2025 my goal is 3,000 miles, which is 8.2 miles a day. My stretch goal is 3,650 miles. I've learned a lot about my body and recovery in general in the 4 years since I ran 2,022 miles. The 10 miles a day I'm trying to run now aren't as painful as I had anticipated (I'm currently averaging 9 miles a day). Stretching is not negotiable. That's my secret, in short.
So why the hell am I doing this? My friend James is a corporate lawyer with 3 kids, a wife, plays pickup b-ball every week and also somehow manages to also run around 2,600 miles a year. I'm married, but I have no kids, and thus, no excuse. So I want to beat him. I want to beat him bad. At the end of 2025 when we compare our years via text as we always do, I want to slam my royal straight flush down on the card table and collect my chips. I want the thought of beating my record so daunting, James thinks twice before attempting it.
Then again, this is James we're talking about. Crazy, “Type A”, obsessive, has-no-slow-speed, lawyer guy. I wouldn't count him out. He doesn't know what I'm attempting to do. Don't tell him.
